DEATH FENCE W.W. I
The Death Fence ("dodendraad") was built by Germany in World War I on the border between occupied Belgium and neutral Holland. This high voltage (2.000 V) fence has cost the lives of several hundreds of people who tried to cross the border. At the end of the war the fence was completely torn down.
In recent years at several places near the border small parts of the fence are rebuilt as a remembrance of the dark times of World War I and of what has happened here and what hopefully never will happen again.
Marjan Lammens-De Caluw, a Dutch writer, has written a beautiful book "Van porselein" about a young woman living near the fence.
